Mesothelioma definition

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer. It is a cancer of mesothelial cells. These cells cover the exterior of most of our internal organs, the formation of a coating which is sometimes called the mesothelium. So this is where this type of cancer gets its name.

Mesothelioma cancer can develop in the tissues covering the lungs or the abdomen

.

Mesothelioma in the chest

The tissues lining (or coverage) of the lung pleura. There are two pleura. It can be called pleural membranes. The gap between them is the pleural space. The pleura are staple sheets. Help protect the lungs. Producing a lubricating fluid that fills the gap between the two pleura. This helps the lungs to move smoothly in the chest as they inflate and deflating as we breathe.

Mesothelioma is most of the cases diagnosed in the pleura. This is known as pleural mesothelioma. Because it is so close, pleural mesothelioma can also affect the leaf tissue of the heart - the pericardium. Doctors called the pericardium the lining, but it is up to the outside of the heart. Protects the heart and allows you to move smoothly within the sac is round. It is long ago for the same work for the heart as the pleura of the lungs.

Mesothelioma in the abdomen

The tissue lining the abdomen (belly), the peritoneum. Helps protect the contents of the abdomen. It also produces a lubricating fluid. This helps the organs to move smoothly into the abdomen and moving.

Mesothelioma tissues lining the abdominal cavity is called peritoneal mesothelioma. Is much less general than pleural mesothelioma.

It is unusual for mesothelioma to spread to other parts of the body. But if they do not cause symptoms usually difficult.

Types of mesothelioma

There are 2 main types of mesothelioma

  • Pleural mesothelioma
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma

The pleural type grows in the tissues of the lungs. Peritoneal type grows in the tissue lining the inside of the abdomen (belly). Pleural mesothelioma is much more common than peritoneal mesothelioma.

Between 7 and 8 of 10 (70-80%) cases of mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma is much less frequently, between 1 and 2 in 10 cases (10-20%).

Mesothelioma by cell
Mesothelioma is also grouped according to how the cells look under a microscope. When mesothelioma is grouped in this way there are 3 types

       * Epithelioid
       * Sarcomatoid or fibrous
       * Mixed type (also known as biphasic type)

Between 5 and 7 of the 10 cases (50-70%) were diagnosed with mesothelioma, epithelioid type.

Between 7 and 20 in 100 cases (7-20%) of mesothelioma diagnosed are sarcomatoid type.

Between 20 and 35 in 100 cases (20 to 35%) were diagnosed with mesothelioma are mixed and sarcomatoid and epitheloid cells.

These types of mesothelioma cells can further divide into other types of cancer called

       * Clear cell
       * Small cell
       Acinar Cells *
       * Tubopapillary cell

With so many different types of mesothelioma cells can develop, making it very difficult to diagnose this disease.
